Day 10

But God

Two words change everything in Ephesians 2. After three verses describing exactly how dead, trapped, and deserving of judgment we were, Paul writes: "But God, who is rich in mercy, because of his great love for us... made us alive with Christ" (Ephesians 2:4-5).

Those two words carry the weight of the whole gospel. You were dead. But God. You were trapped. But God. You couldn't rescue yourself, no matter how hard you tried. But God.

Notice what moves God toward you. Not your effort. Not your progress. Not the version of yourself you were finally starting to clean up. His great love. His rich mercy. He didn't wait for you to be worth rescuing. He came because of who He is, not because of who you'd managed to become.

This is worth sitting with today if you've been carrying the quiet exhaustion of trying to earn something you can't earn. Maybe you're tired from trying to be a good enough spouse, parent, employee, or Christian to deserve God's attention. Maybe you've assumed His love shows up after you clean up, not before.

Paul's order says otherwise. You were dead, and God moved first. Mercy came looking for you before you were looking for it. That doesn't mean your choices don't matter now. It means they were never the reason He came.

Think about the "but God" moments in your own story. A relationship that shouldn't have survived and did. A season you can't explain except to say God showed up in it. A rescue you didn't see coming until you looked back.

Today, let those two words interrupt whatever narrative you've been telling yourself about needing to earn your way back to Him. You were dead. But God. That's still true, right now, however today has gone so far.

Thank God for the "but God" moment in your own story, the mercy that reached you before you'd earned anything. Confess where you've been quietly trying to earn what He already gave you freely. Ask Him to help you rest in His love today instead of performing for it.

Ephesians 2:4-5

But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved.

Romans 5:8

But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Psalms 86:15

But you, Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness.

1 John 4:9-10

This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.
