Day 14

Who Are You Going Back For?

Picture the rescued animal, finally out of the mud, standing back in the pasture. That's not the end of the story for you. If you've been pulled out of something you couldn't escape on your own, there's a question worth asking: who's still stuck, and are you willing to go back for them?

That's not a call to save anyone yourself. Rescue was never your job; it was Jesus's, and it still is. But Paul's picture of being "God's handiwork, created... to do good works" (Ephesians 2:10) includes this: the rescued go back, not into the mud themselves, but toward the people still trapped in it.

Think about the people in your life right now who feel stuck the way you once were. A coworker who's never heard the gospel explained without judgment attached. A neighbor going through something hard, with nobody checking in. A friend who's watched you closely enough to notice something's different about how you handle pressure, loss, or failure, but hasn't asked why yet.

You don't need the perfect words. You don't need a theology degree or a rehearsed speech. You just need to be willing to walk toward someone, the way someone once walked toward you. That might look like a conversation you've been avoiding, an invitation to church or your life group, or simply telling the truth about what God has done in your own life instead of keeping it to yourself.

This applies at home too. Your spouse, your kids, watch how you actually live more than they listen to what you say you believe. Being rescued isn't just a private, personal fact. It's meant to shape who you go back for.

Today, name one person. Not to fix them or save them. Just to go toward them, the way love once went toward you.

Thank God for the moment He came looking for you when you couldn't save yourself. Ask Him to bring one specific person to mind who needs to hear or see the same rescue in their own life. Ask for the boldness to take one small step toward them this week.

Ephesians 2:10

For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Luke 15:4-7

“Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.’ I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.

2 Corinthians 5:18-20

All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God.

Matthew 28:19-20

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
