A mirror can tell you the truth about what you look like, but it can't change what it shows you. You can clean it, polish it, wipe off every fingerprint, and it's still just reflecting whatever is standing in front of it.
James makes almost the same observation about people who hear God's truth but never let it change them: they look in the mirror of God's Word, walk away, and immediately forget what they saw (James 1:22-24). Spiritually, a lot of us have spent years polishing the mirror instead of letting God change what it reflects. We notice our impatience, so we try harder. We feel distant from God, so we add another activity. We're attempting to fix from the outside something only God can change from the inside.
Paul prays for something different: "So that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love" (Ephesians 3:17). Not behavior modification. Not a nicer version of the same heart. Christ himself, dwelling inside, changing you from the root instead of just trimming the branches.
This is why willpower alone eventually runs out. You can white-knuckle patience for a morning, but eventually the real thing underneath shows back up, usually right when you're tired, hungry, or interrupted one too many times. Lasting change doesn't start with gritted teeth. It starts with Christ actually living in you.
And here's the order worth remembering: God isn't changing you so that you'll finally belong to Him. He's changing you because you already do. Grace comes first. Growth follows because of it, not to earn it.
Today, instead of trying to polish the mirror one more time, ask God to change what it reflects.
