Thought of the day
There's an old Greek word behind one line in Ephesians 4 that's worth knowing: worthy. It's the word axios, and it originally meant to balance a scale. One side matches the other; nothing tips the balance.
Paul writes, "I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received" (Ephesians 4:1). He's not asking you to earn your calling by balancing enough good deeds against your bad ones. He's asking for something different: let your daily life match what's already true about you. Let the scale actually balance; identity on one side, everyday life on the other.
Notice the shift. For three chapters, Paul has been describing everything God has already done: chosen you, adopted you, made you alive, brought you near, built you into a family. Now, in chapter 4, he turns a corner. Not so that God will love you, because He already does. The question becomes: does your daily life actually reflect who you already are?
Think about the gap that can open up here. You might believe all the right things about your identity in Christ and still let your Tuesday afternoon look nothing like it . . . short with your spouse . . . . distracted with your kids . . . sharp with a co-worker . . . scrolling past the same temptation you know isn't good for you. None of that erases your identity. But it does mean the scale isn't balanced. The outside doesn't match the inside yet.
This isn't about performing better so God will accept you. It's about your life starting to catch up to what's already true. Today, consider one place where your calling and your actual daily life don't match. Not to feel guilty about it; just to notice it. Ask God to help close that gap.
