Thought of the day
Paul spends verses 3 through 14 of Ephesians 1 on one long, breathless sentence: blessing after blessing, reason after reason to praise God. And notice where he starts. Not with what you've done. With what God has already done.
"He chose us in him before the creation of the world" (Ephesians 1:4). Before you accomplished anything. Before you failed at anything. Before anyone had put a label on you or you'd built a resume worth bragging about, God's plan already had your name in it, tied to Jesus.
Notice the order too. Paul doesn't say God chose us because we were already holy and blameless. He chose us to be holy and blameless. That's the difference between an employer and a father. An employer hires the person who's already qualified. A father chooses his child and then spends a lifetime helping that child grow.
Think about how you got here, to this point in your own faith. Somebody probably invited you when you weren't looking for it. Maybe you walked into a season that was falling apart and somehow found God right in the middle of it. That's not a coincidence you engineered. That's a choice God made about you before you were choosing much of anything for yourself.
This changes the pressure of today. You don't have to perform your way into being chosen; you already are. That doesn't mean today doesn't matter. It means today isn't a tryout. Whatever you're walking into, a hard meeting, a full house, a kid who needs patience you don't feel like you have, you're not walking in to earn a spot. You already have one.
Let that truth go ahead of you into today, into your marriage, your parenting, your work. You are chosen, not because of what you'll accomplish before dinner, but because of what God decided before the world began.
