The final word God uses to describe Himself in Exodus 34 is faithful. After revealing that He is compassionate, gracious, patient, and abounding in love, God concludes by declaring His faithfulness. That is significant because faithfulness is what ties all the other attributes together. God is who He says He is. He does what He says He will do. He keeps His promises. He remains steady when everything else feels uncertain.
Throughout Exodus, Israel gave God countless reasons to walk away. They doubted Him at the Red Sea. They complained in the wilderness. They questioned His provision. They worshiped idols. They rebelled against His leadership. Yet God continued pursuing them. He continued providing for them. He continued leading them. His faithfulness was never rooted in their performance. It was rooted in His character.
That is good news because all of us experience seasons where our faith feels weak. We have moments where we doubt, struggle, fail, wander, or wonder whether God is still at work. Sometimes we assume God’s commitment to us must fluctuate based on how well we are doing spiritually. But Scripture paints a different picture. Second Timothy says, “If we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot disown himself.” God’s faithfulness is not dependent on our consistency. It flows from who He is.
